YRT ridership up, but cuts planned

Use it or lose it.

That`s the message being sent to Aurora residents in York Region Transit`s 2009 draft service report.

The transit service provider is reviewing the performance of all of its routes as it prepares to finalize its 2009 service plan, YRT service planning manager Irene McNeil said.

While it is a challenge for the transit service to get people onto transit in Aurora, Ms McNeil said overall ridership numbers are up 20 per cent in the area, compared to 6 per cent across the region.

Milne trail plan irks some

Some residents are hoping to derail the town`s plans to put a multi-use trail in Milne Park.

"This is a conservation area and people don`t want it touched," explained Myra Chepack, who lives near the park and is a member of the Vinegar Hill Ratepayers Association.

She was one of more than 100 residents who attended a public meeting last month, organized by Ward 4 Councilor Carolina Moretti to update residents on the plans for the trail.

Pickering approves latest Growth Plan instalment

PICKERING -- It`s the headwaters or small streams that flow into a body of water that are the most important to protect, an environmental lawyer told Council Monday night. Durham Region`s draft recommended growth scenario, the fifth instalment of its Growth Plan Implementation Study, was passed by Council at the meeting, and a number of residents shared their views on how the plan shapes the future of Pickering. The plan is a requirement of the Province`s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Access to the high-speed information superhighway, said Regional Chairman Roger Anderson in a press release, will hopefully be a boon to the three northern municipalities as well as Durham.

Honda cuts production by 18,000 vehicles

NEW YORK–Honda Motor Co. said yesterday it will cut its North American production by another 18,000 vehicles, citing the industry-wide drop in demand for new vehicles.

But the plant in Alliston, which produces the popular Civic model, will not be affected.

Honda spokesperson Ed Miller said the cuts are on top of others announced earlier this year and bring the automaker`s total production cuts since August to 50,000 units.

New building might sit atop old building

A proposed office development within sight of Queen West would build a sleek, 10-storey glass tower that hangs over the rooftop garden of the historic building below, mimicking the famous OCAD tabletop a few blocks away.

Dermot Sweeny, the chief architect of the commercial development at the corner of Richmond and Peter streets, also worked on the famous ``stilts`` design of the Ontario College of Art & Design on McCaul Street.

College launches expansion campaign

Niagara College students will be digging into their pockets and giving $10 million over 15 years toward a massive expansion of the post-secondary institution.

The sizable contribution, the largest ever made by the student body, was announced Thursday morning during the launch of the Building Futures Campaign, a major drive to raise money for the college`s $50-million growth plan.

The extensive overhaul of the 40year-old college includes a new athletic centre, academic wing, library and student centre. Construction on a new Skilled Trades and Technology Centre at the Welland campus and wine education centre at the Niagara-on-the-Lake site are underway.

Former realtor guilty of fraud

A financially strapped Michael D. Bistany sold lies as well as real estate when he defrauded clients and family acquaintances out of $247,000.

Bistany, a real estate agent stripped of his licence in 2005, was found guilty Thursday of 19 counts of theft and fraud dating back to 1998. Superior Court Justice Robert Abbey said Bistany told people "deliberate lies" to get them to part with their money, convincing them to invest in a non-existent fund he said he used to assist clients in purchasing property from him.

Densification in official plan will save you money: Hume

If you want to keep municipal property-tax increases low, you had better embrace the principles of a more compact, transit-based city contained in an update of Ottawa`s official land-use plan, says the chairman of council`s planning committee.

On Monday, the updated recommendations will be tabled at a meeting of Alta Vista Councillor Peter Hume`s committee. They represent a continuation of the municipality`s drive to create a more dense, financially and environmentally sustainable city built around public transit instead of roads and cars.

Councillor not phased by vote

The city`s latest multibillion-dollar transit plan should get a smooth ride at council next week. The transit and transportation committees killed a motion to endorse city staff`s phasing-in plan at a joint meeting Wednesday night, but councillors who weren`t at the meeting say council will decide what to build first.

Big Three bailout can be `win-win`

Each and every minute, $1.2 million worth of goods and services are exchanged between Canada and the United States.

That`s well over $650 billion every year.

And almost one-quarter of the merchandise crossing the border in the world`s biggest trading alliance is used to build cars and trucks.

Richmond Hill gets ready to unveil its `People Plan`

There are some residents in Richmond Hill who groan about their town and how the elected officials who make up council do things.

Even last week, a man was overheard saying, "I think the town wastes a lot of money.

"The town`s problem is they don`t spend properly."

Well, some residents` perceptions may change as Richmond Hill staff gets set to unveil the Key Findings and Directions Report of the People Plan project to council Dec. 1.

Immigration flood an economic strain on Peel

A snapshot of the latest census report reveals housing and poverty are poised to become even more troublesome issues in Peel due, in large part, to population growth.
According to 2006 census data, almost 100 people daily, most of them recent immigrants to Canada, made Peel their new home between 2001 and 2006.
Of those, 30 settled in Mississauga each day. During that period, Peel`s population increased by 17 per cent, statistics show.
Peel Data Centre staff presented the findings of the census to Peel Region Council yesterday.
During the five-year period, Mississauga grew by 9.1 per cent, whereas Brampton and Caledon reported 33 per cent and 12.8 per cent growth, respectively.

Big 3 automakers need help now, mayors say

The crisis threatening to bankrupt the Big 3 car companies could send the province into economic ruin, and governments need to act "immediately" to save whatever jobs they can.

This dire message comes from a group of 22 mayors, representing auto-dependent municipalities in southern Ontario, who met yesterday in Toronto to lobby the provincial and federal government to step in now with a "made in Canada" solution.

"There is a very clear and present danger here for Ontario that needs to be addressed immediately and decisively," said Woodstock`s Mayor Michael Harding, adding Canada and the province can`t wait to see what the U.S. does for Chrysler, Ford and GM.
