Firefighters want huge pay jump

London firefighters are demanding a contract that would boost pay and benefits this year 7.6 per cent, say city hall sources.

The two sides met twice this week, and earlier, in March, when the London Professional Fire Fighters Association and city hall exchanged proposals. Asked about the 7.6 per cent figure floated by sources, the president of the association questioned accuracy of the number and said he was simply seeking a fair package that would put firefighters on par with London police and other fire departments. "They`re (sources) throwing out numbers that are probably (not supportable)," Jim Holmes said yesterday.

Study to determine impact of nuke plant

NANTICOKE -- After years of rumours and speculation, Bruce Power announced yesterday it will begin an environmental assessment on the impacts of a nuclear power station in Haldimand County. Bruce Power has optioned 800 hectares within the Lake Erie Industrial Park from US Steel Canada Inc. and is considering building two reactors to generate between 2,000 and 3,000 megawatts of electricity.

A tale of two freezes

There`s never a dull moment in the land development and home-building business, and the last few weeks have been no exception. Last week I wrote about Toronto Mayor David Miller`s proposal to freeze increases to development charges for one year. Hard on the heels of Miller`s positive announcement, we caught wind of another freeze of quite a different sort with Halton Region`s threat to freeze all new development pending resolution of its infrastructure funding concerns.

Loonie`s decline revives local movie industry

It`s been a tough year for Ken Ferguson.

This summer, the president of Toronto Film Studios opened his newest facility, Filmport, but his mega-stage – the largest in North America – remains empty.

To add insult to injury, earlier this year producers of a $60 million feature film expected to be shot in Toronto said they were considering going to New York because it is less expensive to shoot there.

YMCA plan derailed?

Barrie`s Allandale station land could be redeveloped as commercial space, a hotel and heritage buildings.

City councillors will consider a motion Monday to negotiate a deal with developer Forecast, and Mark Porter, for nine acres of land near Lakeshore Drive and Tiffin Street to be called Allandale Market Village.

City staff say the Forecast/Porter plan is superior to the YMCA`s proposal to build a new wellness centre with a gymnasium, pools, fitness rooms, offices and heritage buildings.

Realtor chooses not to testify in his own defence

Former real estate agent Michael D. Bistany took a night to weigh his options and decided not to testify at his own theft and fraud trial Friday.

"Mr. Bistany chooses not to testify and he chooses not to call any other witnesses," defence lawyer Ken Marley informed Superior Court Justice Robert Abbey at the start of the final day of Bistany`s week-long trial. At the end of court a day earlier, Marley told Abbey Bistany might testify.

Bill would put squeeze on lawless landlords

Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi`s private member`s bill to help city authorities deal with troublesome property owners is headed to committee at the Ontario legislature.

Mr. Naqvi`s Bill 106 passed second reading in the Ontario legislature on Thursday and is now referred to the standing committee on justice policy. Mr. Naqvi said he will try to convince that committee and party house leaders to get the bill on a committee agenda soon.

Nordia seeking 120 more workers for Kitchener call centre

KITCHENER

Nordia Inc.`s call centre in Kitchener will hire 120 additional employees by the end of the year, thanks to a new contract.

The call centre will provide customer service support for a Canadian cellular provider beginning in February, Marc Fraser, Nordia`s manager of human resources, said yesterday.

The call centre, located on the third level of Market Square in Kitchener`s core, is already in the midst of hiring 200 new workers after winning another contract to provide telephone support for a company`s satellite television and wireless divisions.

Family donates 2 parcels of land to ORM Trust

York Region`s Groombridge family has donated two 50-acre land parcels to The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust to protect the area from development.

The donation of the conservation easements, located north of the Oak Ridges Moraine in the Township of King, was made possible through a long-standing partnership agreement between the region and the trust to protect environmentally significant properties on, or near, the Oak Ridges Moraine from development in perpetuity.

Arena, fire hall mean work for local labourers, firms

The construction of a $24-million complex in Stouffville could be good news for labourers and contractors looking for work.

Local contractors, suppliers and labourers will be used as much as possible to construct the town`s twin pad arena and fire station, according to Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Wayne Emmerson.

"It`s always important to provide the jobs for local people," Mr. Emmerson said. "You support your community and put back into the community."

U.S. rejects GM`s aid request

DETROIT–The Treasury Department has rejected a request by General Motors for up to $10 billion U.S. to help finance the automaker`s possible merger with Chrysler, according to people close to the talks.

Instead of providing new assistance, the Treasury Department told GM on Friday, the Bush administration will shift its focus to speeding up the $25 billion loan program for fuel-efficient vehicles approved by Congress in September and administered by the Energy Department.

Stuck between Heaven and development

For the past 30 years, Regis College, part of the University of Toronto, has trained aspiring Catholic priests and chaplains in a pair of small, red brick buildings on the historic corner of St. Mary and St. Nicholas streets.

But in July, the Jesuit Fathers of Upper Canada Holding Corporation applied to the City of Toronto to demolish the school and replace it with a 44-storey condominium tower, which, seen from the air, has the contour of a peanut.

New medical clinic planned

The process has been put in motion to see a former grocery store on Memorial Avenue converted into a medical clinic.

Tonight, Orillia City Council will hold a public planning meeting to look at a Zoning Bylaw amendment that would allow for a community health clinic to take up residence in the former National Grocers building across from McKinnell Park on Memorial Avenue. The building has sat empty for several years.

"Utilizing the building will enhance the present state of the property as well as invite new employment opportunities to the area," states the report from the planning and development department.

Sprawl threatens family farm

Ron Gamble is in limbo.

The city is moving ahead to the next phase of its proposal to widen Jockvale Rd. to four lanes. If the plan goes through, Gamble could lose his home and his family greenhouse business, in the Gamble name since 1949. He`s already fielded two "solid" offers from developers hoping to purchase the 11 remaining acres of land from the Gamble family farm that once straddled more than 150 acres along the Jock River.

Future of rail bridge in doubt after railway misses deadline

CAMBRIDGE

Canadian Pacific Railways has missed a deadline to ratify an agreement that would see it move its railway shunting operations out of town next year. The deal with Waterloo Region was proposed to avoid the region having to build a $25 million railway bridge over Hespeler Road just north of the Delta intersection. Regional council has approved the deal, which would help CPR avoid paying for its share of the bridge works.

T.O. targets lousy landlords

City building inspectors will launch a sweeping crackdown on lousy apartment blocks in need of repair with a bold new strategy -- building inspections.

"We`re moving from conducting 14 building audits to conducting 176 building audits," said Jim Hart, executive director of the city`s Municipal Licensing and Standards Division.

"I think we should have been doing it for years. Is this enough? Maybe it isn`t enough but it gets us from 14 buildings to 176. It`s about time we started."
