New Brunswick's jobless rate hits 11% in July

New Brunswick unemployment rate hit 11 per cent in July, according to Statistics Canada's monthly labour force report.

The jobless rate is an increase from 10.8 per cent in June.

Statistics Canada's monthly labour force report also said the province shed 700 jobs last month.

Halifax enjoys unexpected increase in housing starts

Housing starts in Halifax were trending upward in July, but part of that may be due to a glut of stalled projects during the winter, says new Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. figures.

A six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rate showed that Halifax starts were trending at 3,440 units in July, compared with 2,796 in June.

Get ready St John: Irving to create almost 3,000 temp jobs in region demand for suited rentals to jump

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Thousands of temporary jobs will be created in New Brunswick this fall during a maintenance and upgrade project at the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John described as the largest in the company’s history.

Company officials said Thursday the $200-million project, or turnaround as it is termed, will see half the refinery shut down for 60 days starting Sept. 16. The refinery’s output will be halved to about 150,000 barrels a day while the work is underway.
