How many cities do you know right now that are looking to fill 500 vacancies alone during the economic slow-down? This is yet another great sign that Fort McMurray is preparing for the eventual up-swing and a clear indicator that they are being proactive in ensuring they meet the unprecedented growth demands the region will continue to experience for a long time to come.

Enjoy,

Municipality hunting for potential employees in Ontario

Representatives from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are Ontario-bound, on the hunt for potential employees.

With more than 500 staff positions needing to be filled, spokesman Tyran Ault said the municipality`s human resources department is leading the hiring initiative. Municipal HR reps jetted to Waterloo, Ont., today to attend the Work West Career Caravan, which runs this Friday and Saturday.

The job fair targets Ontario workers of all backgrounds to pursue careers in the Prairie provinces.

In an earlier interview with Today, Leslie Robertson, acting general manager of human resources, said with the recent economic slowdown in the region, now is the time for the municipality to play catch-up. The municipality is set to hire staff for positions that have remained vacant for some time as well as fill more than 200 new jobs, recently approved by council.

"Our vacancy rate has been growing so fast over the last 10 years — trying to fill our jobs, we just couldn`t keep up," said Robertson in February. "We`re trying to close that gap on our vacancy rate to make sure we`ve got our people in positions and make sure our services are provided."

According to a press release issued by the municipality, the region`s growth has been averaging nine per cent annually, with the population going from about 35,000 in 2000 to closer to 100,000 in 2008. The boom has made this region Alberta`s third most populated municipality, said Robertson.

Jobs range from road maintenance workers, civil engineers, graphic designers, and fire fighters to financial buyers, lab technicians, recreation and arts co-ordinators, and department managers.

Currently on the municipality`s website, employment opportunities has about 75 jobs currently posted, and more are listed once searches are refined. There are also about 70 summer student jobs posted on a separate page.

An entry-level planner who just graduated from university will be offered an annual salary of $73,000, plus an additional $12,480 cost of living allowance. Even summer students will earn $19.30 an hour and receive the same cost of living allowance, which works out to an additional $1,040 a month.

"More recruitment drives will be coming up later, towards the end of March in St. John`s, Halifax, Guelph, Kingston and Toronto, and they will be specifically targeting students in the east," said Ault this morning. The municipality`s online job board is updated on Fridays.

Also attending Waterloo`s Work West event this weekend in search of additional employees are Westeel, Vicwest, Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, Saskatoon Health Region, Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority, Canadian Forces and the RCMP.
