Multiplex committee proposal ready by June

Following the multiplex steering committee`s meeting Thursday, steering committee, vice-chairman Bevin Leipert released a statement letting citizens know that although the process is taking a long time, the proposed multiplex is not a "dead issue" and the committee would have its proposal to council ready within the next few weeks.
"We want the people to know we have a clear end in sight," he said in a phone interview after he issued the release.

Town takes first step towards future growth

It won`t be long now before Meadow Lake begins to expand.

During their regular meeting on April 28, town council accepted a proposal for planning, survey and preliminary engineering services related to the 80 acres of Town owned property west and south of the Meadow Lake Golf Course.

The proposal came from Ryan King, Project Manager of UMA Engineering Ltd. and stated that they have outlined a work program that identifies a number of tasks necessary to complete the planning, survey and engineering review leading toward the serviceability and development of the land.

Condo policy returns to council

As Saskatoon city council prepares to continue its debate over a condo conversion freeze, one councillor wants to take back a policy amendment that already passed and replace it with another.

Council`s executive committee has proposed putting a stop to approving applications for converting rental apartments into condominiums once Saskatoon`s vacancy rate falls below 1.5 per cent. At a debate that stretched late into the evening at council`s last meeting, councillors could not agree on exceptions to the 1.5 per cent cut-off.

Fax had personal information

Even the old office fax machine can pose a security breach, Saskatchewan`s information and privacy commissioner warned Monday.

Gary Dickson`s office was recently handed a roll of thermal film from a fax machine that had been sold by public auction to someone in Prince Albert, likely in late 2004.

Growing population leading to better economy

The town of Indian Head is swollen these days, thanks to an influx of new residents.

In 2007, 51 families moved to Indian Head. Jill Nault, together with her husband, Brent James, and children, Beth and Sam, moved from Leduc, Alta. in June. She said the family made the move in part because of Alberta`s high cost of living.

Alta., Sask. help slow widening gap

OTTAWA -- The rich didn`t get richer in 2006, but the poor did, putting a halt -- at least temporarily -- to a widening income gap in Canada.

As a result of strong economic growth and gains in employment, pre-tax family incomes rose by 2.1 per cent after inflation, Statistics Canada reported Monday. And thanks to increases in government transfers, after-tax incomes also rose by 2.1 per cent.

U of S considers becoming hotelier

SASKATOON -- The University of Saskatchewan is considering construction of a 200-room hotel within a student housing development after a hotel marketing consultant gave the idea a favourable review.

Vancouver-based PKF Consulting reported to the university that a hotel would work better in a residential development near Griffiths Stadium than on sites near Preston Crossing, Innovation Place and the Field House.

Coal find sparks land rush

SASKATOON -- When it comes to carbon-based minerals, there`s a lot more sex appeal in diamonds than there is in coal, but a new, unique coal find in Saskatchewan announced recently is causing a stir among those who follow the coal industry.

And it`s all because a company`s exploration drilling this winter failed to find diamond-bearing kimberlite.

Prairie Hunter pushes horizons of Sask.`s patch

Ken Fromm and Prairie Hunter Energy Ltd. aren`t exactly the Captain Kirk and the Starship Enterprise of the Saskatchewan oilpatch.

But while Prairie Hunter isn`t claiming to be exploring for oil where no oil company has gone before, it is going to drill where no oil company has gone for at least half a century, said Prairie Hunter president and CEO Fromm.

Small business owners confident in economy

REGINA -- Small business owners can expect some rough sailing in the next year or two, but are well-equipped to weather the economic storm, says the head of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

"(The Canadian economy) will be slowing in the next couple of years," Catherine Swift, president and CEO of the 105,000-member small business lobby group, said in an interview Monday.

News articles on Friday

Hello everyone. At a recent REIN meeting in Calgary, Russell suggested we leave our home provinces and attend an event in BC or Ontario to see what other real estate markets are like. With that in mind, I will be attending my first ever REIN meeting in BC. Please note that your daily edition of Sask Economic Fundamentals may be cancelled on Friday but will definitely be back on Saturday. Just between you and me, Sask REIN Members are the best! Please keep this confidential.

Riverside Drive overpass to be repaired

On Monday, city council approved the sole bid on Riverside Drive overpass repairs.

JNE Welding, a company from Saskatoon, was the only firm to bid on the contract to mend support beams on the Riverside Drive overpass. The tender was awarded to JNE Welding for $362,000, but through negotiations with the contractor, the city was able to reduce the cost by about $52,000 - nearly 15 per cent.

Painting the beams was deemed unessential, and cut from the project. This was the main source of savings for the city.

No stand-alone trade offices: Wall

Premier Brad Wall says his government would like Saskatchewan to have a presence in important U.S. markets, but insists he won`t set up stand-alone foreign trade offices.

While the government`s recently introduced Bill 31 would allow the establishment of an out-of-province offices to promote Saskatchewan, Wall said such work would only be done through an arrangement to use some space within existing consulate or embassy offices.

City excited for ghostly new area

While streets in a newly proposed neighbourhood in southeast Regina will take their names from some of this province`s ghost towns, the developer expects some 8,300 souls to take up residence there.

"People are excited. They`re buying and moving here," said Doug Rogers of Terra Developments when asked about the demand for more housing. He`s already fielding calls from people inquiring about lots.

Maple Leaf beefs up with facility

Wide refrigerators can hold a lot of food for a hungry family, but when you`re feeding communities in five provinces and all three territories, a new Frigidaire just won`t do.

Something along the lines of a custom-built 93,000-square-foot cooler with an attached 48,000-square-foot freezer, however, might be enough to handle the job. That`s what Maple Leaf Consumer Foods is banking on with its new distribution centre on 18.6 acres of land in Saskatoon`s Marquis Industrial zone.

Mill rate increase to benefit trades

Trades training, pre-Kindergarten classrooms and supervised lunch hours are just a few of the ways a mill rate increase for public school supporters will be spent.

Last week, the board of the Regina Public Schools approved a 3.8-per-cent mill rate increase for education property taxes, which will boost the division`s budget to $176,305,710 for the year.

Project a long way off: Boyd

The Saskatchewan Party government said Wednesday it won`t rush headlong into the nuclear age even as private sector interest may be speeding up the timelines for nuclear power development in Saskatchewan.

Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said in Calgary a day earlier that the government has had preliminary discussions with private sector nuclear company Bruce Power LP and welcomes its interest in developing a reactor in Saskatchewan.
