Reccomendation for project management software

After having a general do our last two renos, Trish and I are going to take on the next one ourselves and are looking for reccomendations for a good, home based project management tracker to help us tick the boxes on tasks and schedule in our sub-trades. Any suggestions?

MS Excel or MS Project if more complex project

ProjectLibre is a free open source project manager that works quite well without overwhelming you with the complexities of project management.

Excel is always an option too. Google for some project management templates for Excel.
