We are off in a couple of minutes for an evening with our extended family, hosted by Debbie`s very special 84 year old Aunt. Then tomorrow opening presents with our kids and grandkids in the afternoon, and Christmas dinner at our home with two dear friends whose family could not make it here for Christmas. Some shopping time on Boxing Day of course, a visit with our REMA partner Brian and his wife Rita, and then we drive out to our 2nd home in BC for a week in the mountains. Our son, daughter-in-law and their two girls plan to join us there for a few days over New Year`s. I think we`ll head down to the Angus McToogles pub on New Year`s eve and maybe even hoist a few while there.

How much better could it be? We are blessed indeed.

Merry Christmas all!

I wish to say the following:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an
environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive,
gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced with
the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices
of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or
traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular
traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically
uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted Gregorian
calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice
of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our
country great and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical
ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is
subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no
alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to
actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void
where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the
wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual
application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance
of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is
limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole
discretion of the wisher.

Ba Humbug. I`m snowed in so the highlights of my day involved watching a CNBC special on "Bernie Madoff & The 50 Billion Dollar Heist and drinking Gin & Tonics-alone. I must say this beats being obligated to show up to certain social events. I`m using the extra time to plan my New Year early. Merry Christmas Y`all.

Merry Christmas to all, as well.

My sister arrived in Vancouver from Halifax yesterday, after a 36 hour delay leaving Halifax. (Jack, she flew West Jet.) We spent Xmas eve with friends, coming home just minutes before the power to a large portion of North Vancouver went out.

Christmas morning we woke to still no power. I dug my car out of 12" of new snow, in order to relocate our dinner. We were on the verge of moving our Christmas celebration to another location, with our coats on and bags of food packed, when the power came back on around 10:30 this morning. WHEW! That was close.

It is a quite day at home, opening presents, and preparing Xmas dinner (roast lamb this year), and just enjoying eah other`s company. Claire, my partner, is a community health nurse who is on call for the next three days. That prevents us from straying too far from home this year.

In pre-literate societies weeks of 4 to 10 days were observed; those weeks were typically the interval from one market day to the next. Four to 10 days gave farmers enough time to accumulate and transport goods to sell. (The one week that was almost always avoided was the 7-day week -- it was considered unlucky!) The 7-day week was introduced in Rome (where ides, nones, and calends were the vogue) in the first century A.D. by Persian astrology fanatics, not by Christians or Jews.

There are thousands of gods that humans have imagined, depending on culture, conditioning, and perception.
