City council voted Monday to approve two condo towers planned for the downtown core.
But a 27-storey development at 97th Avenue and 106th Street did not pass without argument.
The $45-million Raintree condo complex will cause significant changes to the character of a heritage district around the legislature grounds, said David Craig, a resident of a building next to the development site.
"I think we should stop calling it the heritage district."
The Raintree will have 160 units when it is built, which will increase traffic congestion in the area, Craig said. "The higher population density of this development will only exacerbate the present problem of ingress and egress of traffic, and the potential for problems for emergency vehicles to access this area."
Coun. Ben Henderson expressed concern that the Raintree is being built in an area without a lot of easily accessible amenities. He pointed out the building will sit at the bottom of a hill, while LRT and bus service is at the top of the hill closer to downtown. Despite pointing out the area is currently "not walkable," Henderson voted in favour of the Raintree.
