The year-over-year rate of retail sales growth in Alberta continues to slow and is now behind the other western provinces, but consumers here still spend more money per capita than the rest of the country -- about 50 per cent higher than the national average.

Data released by Statistics Canada on Friday indicates retail sales in Alberta grew by 0.4 per cent in December from the previous month to $5.174 billion and the year-over-year growth was 6.8 per cent. Nationally, retail sales hit $35.1 billion in December, a 0.6 per cent hike from November and a 5.2 per cent annual growth.
