Hot rock potential new energy

A yet-to-be released source of energy may lurk underneath Alberta, says a study issued yesterday by the University of Calgary.

The study, funded by the Alberta Energy Research Institute to the tune of $30,000, argues that layers of hot rock deep underneath the Earth`s surface could be tapped for geothermal energy, which in turn could be converted into electricity or used to create steam for in situ oil recovery. Study co-author Michal Moore, a senior fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy, said he`ll use the results to lobby Ottawa and Edmonton to fund a "much broader" study.
