Growth will slow down

Saskatchewan will continue to lead the country in economic growth in 2009, but at a slower pace, reflecting lower commodity prices and the global economic downturn, says a senior bank economist.

"Growth rates for both `08 and `09 have been revised downwards,`` said Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist for the RBC Financial Group. "For `08, we`re now talking about growth of 3.5 per cent dropping to 2.8 per cent in 2009.``

Home sales decline in Sask., but average price rises

Saskatchewan`s high-flying housing market is being caught in the downdraft of the national housing market tailspin, posting a nearly 30-per-cent decrease in homes sold last month over November 2007.

But average prices rose by 12.5 per cent in November, bucking the national trend, which saw nearly a 10-per-cent decrease in prices during the same period, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA).

Finance: Twinning Highway 11 priority for Sask.

The package infuriated the opposition parties, which formed a makeshift coalition to try and topple the government on a confidence vote. Instead, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean granted Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogation of Parliament.

The government also responded by moving the budget date up to Jan. 27 and declaring itself open to input.

Gantefoer said the federal government has reached out to the provinces.

Building in Regina continues at brisk pace

Building permits issued in Regina may surpass the record value of $337.7 million set last year.

The latest report issued by the City of Regina shows that, as of last Thursday, the cumulative total value of construction permits to be $332.9 million, compared to $329.4 million at this point last year.

"What this report suggests is that the value of the building permits is equal to last year at this time," said Garry Wasyliw, manager of the building branch for the City of Regina.

Sask. exports nearly double

REGINA -- Saskatchewan exporters and manufacturers are outperforming most of their provincial counterparts this year, as exports nearly doubled and manufacturing sales increased 16 per cent in October over last year, says Statistics Canada data released Tuesday.

Total international exports in the first 10 months topped $27 billion, up from $10 billion during the same period last year and breaking the previous record for total exports of $20 billion set in 2007.

Alberta`s meat strategy important for Saskatchewan

Most people sitting around kitchen tables in Saskatchewan farm homes won`t recognize the name Kim McConnell, but in the months ahead his vision and guidance could become very important for the country`s livestock industry.

McConnell is well-known in Alberta, as well as in the corporate boardrooms of major agricultural companies across Canada. He`s the founder and former CEO of AdFarm, an international agriculture-focused marketing firm based in Calgary.

Regina top city: economic report

For the first time ever, Regina tops the economic momentum rankings of 24 Canadian cities, boosted by strong population and job growth and low unemployment and bankruptcy rates, according to a new report from CIBC World Markets.

"It is the first time, but Saskatchewan has been the darling of the Canadian economy for the past six months," said Benjamin Tal, senior economist at CIBC World Markets and author of CIBC`s Metro Monitor report.

`Tis the season for Internet scams

All Celina Hoppenreys wanted for Christmas this year was a puppy, but she was surprised at the online scam she uncovered last week.

Hoppenreys wanted a Yorkie puppy and turned to the Internet to search for one online. She made contact with a person in Ontario who identified herself only as Amanda. Hoppenreys was told the cost for the puppy would be $650 plus $100 for shipping costs, which she thought was a good price for the dog.

Outlook brighter in Sask.

Saskatchewan is an island of optimism in a sea of pessimism stirred up by the global economic storm, according to two surveys released Wednesday by the province`s largest business groups.

The latest survey by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) indicates Saskatchewan small business owners are still the most optimistic in Canada, but their level of optimism has fallen since the third quarter.

Saskatchewan leads the country in wholesale trade

Saskatchewan led the nation with a 40-per-cent increase in wholesale trade from October 2007 to October 2008, according to a report issued by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.

Saskatchewan`s increase is 11 times greater than the national average of 3.5 per cent, the report said.

Doug Elliott of Sask Trends Monitor said the big reason for the increase stems from the farming sector of wholesale trade, namely agricultural inputs like chemicals, fertilizers and fuel.

Saskatoon province`s tourism capital

Nearly two million visitors spent $439 million in Saskatoon in 2007, a record for tourism in the city that is already being broken by travel in 2008.

Todd Brandt, president and CEO of Tourism Saskatoon, said while data from 2007 reflects contributions of between three and four per cent to the city`s GDP, visitor travel to Saskatoon, and visitor spending, is about 11 per cent higher this year than last.

Sask. spending continues

The great Saskatchewan consumer spending spree is continuing, despite ominous signs of a national and international recession.

That continuing big spending trend was confirmed by Statistics Canada data released Thursday, showing retail sales in the province in October were up 10.9 per cent compared to October of last year and 1.5 per cent compared to September of this year.

The temporary notices, described as inventory adjustment notices, cover the period of Jan. 18 through March 15.

The mines will essentially be shut down for eight weeks.

Saskatchewan`s population continues to grow

Saskatchewan`s population has surpassed 1.02 million for the first time in about 20 years.

But the focus Friday was on one man running back to Regina -- legendary Saskatchewan Roughriders star George Reed.

"When I left here, I didn`t leave because I wanted to leave," said Reed, whose post-football job in sales took him to Calgary in the 1980s. "I`ve watched as the city has grown and the province has grown and so forth, and we`ve often thought -- my wife and I -- we`ve often thought that if something special came up, we`d be looking to come back. Something happened and we`re happy to be coming back."

Sask. sees highest rise in prices

Higher prices for food, housing and natural gas helped fuel a 3.2 per cent increase in consumer prices in Saskatchewan last month, the highest in the country.

"We`re out of sync with the rest of the country once again," said Doug Elliott, the publisher of the Sask Trends Monitor newsletter.

"This (inflation) is one of the downsides of economic growth."

Northwest communities form group

An enterprise region that includes more than six communities in northwest Saskatchewan is being formed.

The Multi-Stakeholder Working Group includes Pierceland, Goodsoil, Loon Lake, Dorintosh, Meadow Lake, Big River and surrounding rural municipalities. The group, which is expected to be established by the end of February, is being formed under the provincial government`s Enterprise Saskatchewan mandate.

Saskatoon families open wallets, boost spending 12 per cent

Saskatoon`s big spenders appear to like their cars, trucks and ATVs, as families in the city spent remarkably more money in 2007 than the previous year.

On average, Saskatoon families spent $72,592 in 2007, up more than 12 per cent -- or $8,000 -- from 2006, Statistics Canada said Monday in its annual report on family expenditures. It`s one of the largest growth rates in the country.

BHP Billiton opens Saskatoon office

Walking down the second-floor hallway to Gord Graham`s new office, it`s easy to think there are more construction workers employed at BHP Billiton Inc.`s home base in Saskatchewan than potash mining experts.

Labourers are using the elevator to move drywall from floor to floor at the Innovation Place building and, outside, men in safety vests are discussing the day ahead. But at the far end of the second-floor corridor, a sense of quiet opportunity replaces the power tools busy at 421 Downey Rd.
