Businesses warned of scam

The Better Business Bureau of Saskatchewan is warning businesses to beware of misleading calls regarding print and online phone directory services.

The BBB of Saskatchewan has received inquires from businesses that have been contacted regarding their phonebook advertising.

Callers have been misleading businesses, suggesting they are from DirectWest or Canwest, which also publishes a phone book in some Saskatchewan markets.

Condos to go up next to cathedral

City council has cleared a path for construction of a condo highrise as tall as 15 storeys on the south side of the historic St. John`s Anglican Church.

After a public hearing Monday, council agreed to lift the heritage designation from a small parcel of land owned by the church immediately south of the cathedral. The heritage designation remains in place on the cathedral.

The church is selling the land to Remai Ventures.

Sask. in strong position despite turmoil: economists

REGINA -- Saskatchewan is in a good position to ride out the economic storm emanating from the United States, but there will definitely be an impact on the province from the turmoil, said economists interviewed Tuesday.

With a massive potential bailout of Wall Street by the U.S. government still up in the air, there are layers of uncertainty about what will happen next.

Morris Altman, head of the economics department at the University of Saskatchewan, said a successful government intervention to buoy markets and ease a potential credit crunch would be beneficial.

Athabasca Potash increases mine estimate

TORONTO - It took a day longer than the company would have liked, but investors realized Tuesday that Athabasca Potash Inc. is definitely on to something big.

On Monday morning, the Saskatoon-based junior potash company released a huge resource update that got ignored as the markets went into a historic tailspin. But as the fear dissipated Tuesday, Athabasca`s shares shot up 30 per cent, closing at $4.10.

Regina rental market remains tight

Affordable housing is at a premium for Regina renters -- particularly those with large families.

"We have a waiting list of probably 150 people for family units and then probably 50 are on our affordable waiting list," said Faith Myers, the manager of tenant relations with the Regina Housing Authority.

"With the rents as high as they are in the open market, it is very difficult for people to find something that`s affordable."

Property tax hike predicted

Regina property taxpayers could see a $10.7-million tax hike in 2009, thanks to a sharp decrease in education foundation grants due to reassessment, according to the head of the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce.

Saskatoon residents could face a $5-million tax increase, barring any changes in the way the education portion of property taxes are calculated, added John Hopkins, CEO of the Regina chamber.

Old refinery site in city`s northeast creates concerns

Environmental impacts that will likely require corrective action to fix appear to exist at an old Esso oil refinery site in northeast Regina, a spokesman for the Saskatchewan Ministry of the Environment said Wednesday.

Ralph Bock, an environmental project officer with the province`s environmental protection branch, said the department believes there are environmental issues that need to be addressed at the old refinery site, at Winnipeg Street and 1st Avenue.

More changes in store for Spadina skyline

St. John`s Anglican Church isn`t the only landmark downtown church considering adding housing to its site.

The Saskatoon Catholic Diocese plans to sell or co-develop the land under its St. Paul`s rectory and Catholic Centre between Fifth Avenue and Spadina Crescent downtown, said Bishop Albert LeGatt. The proceeds will go toward building a new cathedral in northeast Saskatoon. St. Paul`s will remain open as a parish.

Premier promotes province in Ontario

REGINA -- Premier Brad Wall said Wednesday his sales job of Saskatchewan in Toronto earlier this week found a receptive audience among new Canadians.

Among the activities in the Toronto trip was a barbecue in the city`s Thorncliffe neighbourhood aimed at people who have immigrated to Canada.

They weren`t daunted by the prospect of coming to Saskatchewan and were intrigued by the possibilities, said the premier on Wednesday.

Development could create complications for property owners

While a transportation hub planned for west of Regina is expected to boost the local economy and bring in a wealth of jobs, it is not coming without a cost to property owners in the area.

Ian Haynes owns a quarter section of land on the south side of the Canadian Pacific rail tracks where he runs a successful cattle operation. However, the land on the other side of the tracks is to be home to a new industrial park, which will be adjacent to the anticipated CP Intermodal Facility (IMF).

Condo owners upset

Condo owners could face higher property taxes as a result of tax policy changes being considered at city hall -- and they`re not amused.

Those changes would increase the property tax burden for owners of single-family homes and of condos but decrease the tax burden for owners of apartment buildings and other multi-family homes.

Recycled shopping mall earns praise

A recycled downtown Regina shopping mall that was turned into a government service centre is `LEED`ing by example in Canada`s efforts for greener construction.

The Alvin Hamilton Building at 1783 Hamilton St. received a gold certification by Building Owners and Management Association (BOMA) Canada on Wednesday for surpassing the energy optimization requirements that make a building eligible for certification.

Gov`t plans to offer relief from rising energy costs: Wall

REGINA -- With a 20 per cent increase in SaskEnergy rates kicking in Wednesday and a sizable SaskPower hike looking likely in the near future, the Opposition NDP wondered Wednesday what`s happened to the Saskatchewan Party government`s promised relief for rising costs.

In response, Premier Brad Wall said the government is looking at tax cuts, not rebates to homeowners, to help deal with heating costs have risen to $8.51 per gigajoule from $6.57.

Market finds a balance

Selling prices for homes in Regina remained high last month but a more balanced real estate market was moderating the pace of activity.

The latest monthly data, released Friday by the Association of Regina Realtors, indicated the average price of a residential property sold in the city in September was $245,066, which was a record for that month. The old September record, set last year, was $196,320.

House prices in Saskatoon up 23 per cent

The number of homes sold in Saskatoon continued to decline for the third straight month in September, new data shows.

Figures complied by the Saskatoon Region Association of Realtors (SRAR) show 246 homes were sold in the city last month, down from 327 in August and 458 in July. Year-to-date, nearly 3,000 residential units have been sold, says the association, down 18 per cent from last year when 3,600 had been purchased.

Harper out of sync, Martin says during visit to Regina

Political heavyweights campaigning in Regina on Saturday to shore up support in a key riding weren`t pulling any punches.

At a news conference held at a downtown hotel, former prime minister Paul Martin began his jabs at the Conservative Party immediately after he was introduced by Ralph Goodale, who holds the title of Saskatchewan`s longest serving Liberal MP and is running in the Wascana riding.

City seeks home builders` feedback

City council will be seeking feedback from home builders on proposed increases for development application fees.

"(The application fees) cover everything from zoning changes to a concept plan amendment to applications to the planning commission," said Coun. Michael Fougere, following Monday night`s city council meeting.
