Canadian government ran $5-billion surplus over first quarter reveals Finance Canada

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper seized on a new report showing Ottawa recorded a $5-billion surplus in the first quarter as evidence that his fiscal plan is working.

As it has during previous election campaigns, Finance Canada continues to publish its monthly Fiscal Monitor reports, which provide a running tally of federal revenues and expenses throughout the year.

Unhappy with ambiguity, economists struggling to say 'I don't know'

For as long as humans have walked the Earth and possessed self-awareness, we’ve been contending with ambiguity and uncertainty. Entire fields of academic study – philosophy, religion, psychology, medicine – have had to come to terms with the mystery of certain topics. It's not talked about nearly as much as oil or Islamic State, yet lack of water is driving conflict and strife in the Middle East and North Africa.

The World Resources Institute released this week a water-stress index measuring competition and depletion of surface water. It shows which countries are most vulnerable to scarcity in 2040. Nearly half of the 33 countries that fall in the extremely high risk category are in the Middle East.

Conference Board of Canada downgrades Canada's growth forecast

The contraction of the Canadian economy in the first quarter of the year, lower oil prices, a near-record trade deficit and uncertainty in global markets have dimmed the growth outlook for Canada. The Conference Board of Canada expects the Canadian economy to grow by just 1.6 per cent in 2015, its worst showing since 2009. This represents a further downgrade from previous quarterly Canadian Outlook releases.

How important is Canada to the US export market? Before you look at attached graph guess where we rank:

Canada probably experienced a technical recession in the first half of 2015, and the fact that the No. 1 U.S. export market is in a slump could spell bad news for growth in the world's biggest economy.

Canada's gross domestic product contracted for a second quarter in the three months through June, a Sept. 1 report will show, according to almost all economists in a Bloomberg survey. The economy probably shrank by 1 percent, even worse than the 0.6 percent first-quarter drop.
