Tsuu T`ina chief eager to reach ring road deal

Only a "handful" of remaining issues are hampering the much-discussed final deal on the southwest ring road, says newly re-elected Tsuu T`ina Chief Sand-ford Big Plume.

The province and Tsuu T`ina have been negotiating over the strip of reserve land sought for the southwest section of Calgary`s ring road.

Both sides claim they are closing in on the deal, and though negotiations have faced years of delays, Big Plume said ongoing discussions are "bearing fruit.

Roots opens first Calgary streetfront store

Despite the current economic crisis -- and concerns about future consumer spending -- Roots has opened a "flagship" store in Calgary, its sixth store in the city and first one outside a mall environment.

The 2,600-square-foot streetfront store located just outside the downtown core at 17th Avenue and 4th Street S. W., opened Nov. 1, but held a grand opening Friday.

Albertans still earn the most

Albertans remained the country`s top earners in September, says a report Statistics Canada released yesterday, despite the fact earnings in the oil and gas extraction shrank slightly the same month.

An average Albertan earned $894 per week, including overtime, in September, up 2.1% from August. No other province recorded a similar increase in earnings that month. In fact, Alberta was the only province to register an earnings increase greater than 1%, while paycheques in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia were slightly slimmer.

Single-family starts feel the brunt of Edmonton slowdown

Edmonton`s home building sector is running at less than half what it was a year ago, according to the federal housing agency.

For the first 10 months of this year, work has started on 6,012 homes of all types, which is down more than 54 per cent from 13,219 in 2007, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

A Stake To The Heartland. Oilsands deferrals may see bitumen, cash and jobs all go south

Cathy Olesen is counting on her fingers. She is the mayor of Strathcona County, part of an area that as recently as six months ago was slated to host as much as $90-billion worth of heavy-oil upgrader projects--giant masses of rust-coloured steel that transform heavy oil into synthetic crude, getting it one step closer to petroleum products such as gasoline. At least seven projects had been pencilled in, each of them promising millions in economic spinoffs.
